COMMON MYTHS ABOUT DEPRESSION IN INDIA...

Myths often prevent people from doing the right thing. Myths about depression often separate people from the effective treatments now available and deter effective diagnosis and treatment.

We want INDIANS to know the FACTS...

Ø     Depression by itself is a complex subject and to add to it are the various myths that further keep people down and alone from seeking professional help and proper treatment.

Ø     Facts get confused with fiction. There are many myths involving depression in India

Ø     An attempt has been made here in uncovering and dispelling the myths about depression in India.

Ø     You will find some common myths below as well as a factual explanation to each.

We are dedicated to reducing the stigma associated with depression and other mental illnesses in India.

SOME COMMON MYTHS ABOUT DEPRESSION IN INDIA:

MYTH: Depression is a personal or emotional weakness and indicates weak character.

FACT: NO. Depression is an illness not a character flaw. Depression is not a sign of personal weakness. Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill are only a few of the strong people history suggests struggled with depression. It's not a condition that you can will or wish away.

People suffering from depression cannot merely expect to "pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms of depression may persist or get worse. With treatment, you may begin to experience significant relief within four to six weeks.
