Ø      Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT):

In general, ECT is used as a last resort, but it has proven helpful in people with severe depression who do not respond to other treatments.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is useful, particularly for individuals whose depression is severe or life threatening.

Ø      Light (phototherapy) therapy:

Light therapy involves increased exposure to natural or artificial light. This treatment is normally used for patients who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Ø      Herbal therapy :

In the past few years, much interest has risen in the use of herbs in the treatment of both depression and anxiety.

ESSENTIAL FACTS YOU MUST REMEMBER ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS…

  • Psychotherapy and Medications are the two primary treatment approaches.

  • Antidepressant medications can make psychotherapy more effective, for some people.

For instance, someone who is too depressed to talk, can't get much benefit from psychotherapy or counselling; but often, the right antidepressant will improve symptoms so that the person can respond better.
